FISHING MANITOBA

Had a blast on Manigotagan and Quesnel Lake for the last few days ! Fished for the elusive Walleye all over the lakes...tough to find, but found pods of them off windswept points at 12-18 feet. Had to double-anchor (front and back) and sit there with bait. They took lightly at bottom to 3 inches off, but you had to dead stick the bait. In retrospect, I might have done better with the secret weapon of last resort...the pickerel rig! Stubbornly continued to use 1/4 oz. jigs in white with painted on eyes and a smoke color tail. The frozen minnow had to be above average size. Next time I will bring frozen smelts. The total was 32 walleye over 2 days, all but 2 were over 21" and 2 were 24". During the slower times (from 2-5PM each day) had fun hauling in monster Smallmouth. Big jigs , lead head with white 3" twister tail dressed with 2" nightcrawler bounced from shore to 15' was the ticket. Best spots were over a saddle or points with a drop-off. Usually got one per point, but it was usually 3-4 1/2 pounds!! Got 10 in Manigotagan Lake and 7 in Quesnel that way. What a fishery!!!! Almost hated to get back to fishing Walleyes!
Water levels are still above average for this time of year, so I expect a couple more weeks of this type of fishing on that water system. Saw some moose along shore and the eagles were doing a lot of circling. BTW...I took a hike to the small lake at the bottom of the waterfalls one KM downstream from the coffer dam at the outflow of Quesnel Lake. Fishing was spotty. Caught 3 walleye , all less than a pound, and a bunch of smallies, biggest was 15 inches. Best surprise was the approx 45 inch northern trying to run away with a small walleye I had just hooked. Put up a helluva fight, but he eventually let go and slowly swam away. That is a big fish that will get bigger next time I visit.
Lots of litter in the area ! What kind of morons leave behind old sleeping bags, hibachi's, fishing line, plastic minnow containers, etc.? It saddens me to see such abuse of this pristine area. Please, let's remind those we see committing the deeds what we think of that! I get pretty nasty looks from jerks when I admonish them for littering at Lockport . So sad they don't get it!
Enough soapbox...have fun on the water, there is still lots of great fishing out there until freeze-up. Next week, I am going fly-fishing for 'bows in the Ducks...any suggestions?
