Hi Gabriele,
First, I want to say that FD is one of the finest utilities available for Windows and thanks for all your hard work over the years. I am one of the faithful who have been using it since the early Free Desktop days.
I am replying to this thread because I noticed the same problem. But I am running on NT.
First, an issue that I see regulary when I upgrade is that even though FD is shut down, I get a message from the installer that FDHooks.dll is still in use. No problem, I just rename the locked file, and continue with the install.
The first thing I noticed when I started 2.52.80 is that icons 5-8 showed up in my tray. The "Number of Desktops" was still set to 4 though. If i played with that value a bit, and set it back to 4, it fixed that problem. The next problem that I found was the "Show Flash Desktops Tray Icons" button was greyed out and I could no longer turn it off... If I restarted FD, still the same problem. I usually like to keep that option off. The only way I could get it fixed was to use the hotkey to "Hide/Show Desktop icons". After using the hotkey once, the button turn un-gray. And my icons disappeared. What I see though is if I select the "Show Flash Desktops Tray Icons" button again. It will turn on then grey out again. Then again, I have to use the hotkey to turn it off.
Hope this made some kinda sense.
Again, thanks for such a great product, it's better than any desktop manager that I've seen to date.
