I have now switched to 8 desktops, set all icons to 'always show' and use your hide hotkey. everything is ok for the time. *** Maybe you would consider having an option to only have single tray icon which shows 1 to 8 depending on the current desktop. this would be perfect for users like myself who prefer to use keys to navigate and would use far less space in the system tray ***

XP has a new option that allows you to control how tray icons appear. these are:
always hide icon (runs in tray but icon is not visible)
and
hide when inactive
