Question about customizing tooltips

Can I customize the tool-tip text that appears when I hover over a desktop icon ?
Currently it just says "Desk 1", "Desk 2" etc.
Much, much more useful would be if I could customize it to say what I wanted to so when I hover on a desktop icon, it says what I want.
