Posted by Paul on December 3, 2005, 6:19 am Workout A (4 Sets, 8 Rep) Workout B Su,M,T,Th,F,Sa – 2.5 mile jog The routines take about an hour and then the 20 minutes run. They are done at roughly the same times in the day each day they are done. I usually do change up the workout exercises periodically. I just started doing the pull-ups and am really struggling with them. My goal is to be able to do 12 but now I am just doing anything I can think of the build up the strength. Ok now for the questions. I have noticed it is really difficult to gain like it was when I started. And, I feel like back then I wasn’t even trying as hard as I do now (pushing out the last bit, focusing on form, etc.). Physically, I feel good even though I do wear down and have to take a break from it all, but I am wondering if it is possible that the human body can become so adapted to the daily activity and the regularity, or sameness, that it just knows it doesn’t have to produce anything? If I want to gain should I just drop the running for a while focus only on the weights? Would changing up the running route do anything? Does the workout sound ok. I eat in moderation sometimes less so, which I am wondering if is a problem. Even my diet is pretty regular (Same items day in and day out). I know, regularity and sameness is boring but that’s me. I hope you all don’t mind the long post and your opinions would be welcomed. I hope to continue this active life style as I grow older as I believe the quality of life is much improved. Skating once or twice a week does wonders for improving my sense of focus, and balance at my age and offering that adrenaline rush.

Hi,
My name is Paul and I just wanted to introduce myself as I read this forum and the site often for useful information. I found this site about 6 months ago and it’s really a great site. I am 36 and I kind of stumbled into weight training as a secondary interests about 2 years ago and now I have gotten really interested in it. About 3 years ago a buddy of mine got me back doing something I did as a kid but never thought I could do at this age. Skateboarding on ramps and in concrete pools. He had built a ramp and begging for someone to skate with. We did it together as kids. I was running and was in good shape aerobically to do it but having started back at this age I was getting hurt and pulling muscles in my upper body often so I started lifting. That seemed to solve it so I just continued a regimented and committed lifting program. Thing is, I don’t really workout my lower body at all because I never quit the running, and even though I only get to the ramp once or twice a week, riding it is essentially the same effect as doing squats except only on the quads and I just don’t want my legs burned out. Now that I have really taken an interests to lifting I am beginning to wonder if I have stumbled onto problems of regularity and sameness affecting my ability gain and build muscles. I am running 2.5 miles (same route) a day about 5-6 days per week, getting to the ramp about 1 day, and lifting on an upper body split M-W-F. One week workout A will be two times a week with B one, then B two time the next, etc. Currently, My workout is as follows:
Bench Press
DB Chest fly
Weighted Dips
Shoulder Presses
Upright Rows
Vert Knee raises
Wide grip Pull-up 4sets of 4
Regular grip chin-up 4 sets of 6
Incline Curls 4,8
Bent Over Rows 4,8
Knee raises
