: Why do people gain weight when they first start weightlifting? I
: can't believe it's muscle. Is it water weight? And if so,
: what's the water for?
:
this depends on what time frame you are talking about. If you are talking about the general first few months or so of a beginners exercise, it is from the body responding to the extra reisistance or load placed upon it. The beginners muscles are like dry sponges placed in water. They will respond to just about anything that is thrown at them. Usually again, since you are starting an exercise program, more than likley you are cleaning up and increasing your nutritional levels along with it, so that also causes you to gain weight because of the extra (proper)form of calories being introduced. As you prgress and your body gets used to the program, gains will slow down.
