Posted by Bill Q on November 30, 2005, 12:04 pm, in reply to "how to measure progress" --Previous Message-- Hi Evan: I don't know if you've seen these calculators on the exrx.net site -- I find them helpful for measuring progress: http://www.exrx.net/Calculators/MaleGirthCalculator.html I have a MyoTape tape measure and Accu-Measure calipers that I use to take my measurements and determine my body fat each week so I can see what direction I'm headed. I save my weekly stats in a Microsoft Excel file. The "Male Girth" calculator (that sounds so weird) just kind of gives me something to shoot for, but you may decide that your "ideal" measurements aren't what the calculator recommends. (BTW, I measure the biceps flexed and unflexed, although I pay more attention to the flexed measurement.) Another thing that can be helpful (or frustrating sometimes) is to look at old workout logs. If you can find a place to save them, you'll be able to look back and say, "Ahh, I remember when I was that scrawny little man who would have been AMAZED by my lifts today!" Then, with a manly grin, thump your chest and spend the next 15 minutes flexing in front of a mirror. (Unfortunately, I've found that no matter how much I flex, the muscles never get stuck that way.) Hope that helps. -BQ

: I was wondering how I would go about measuring progress. I know
: weight is one thing to look at, but I know there are other ways
: to guage progress with a measuring tape. I've been using a
: measuring tape to measure my chest and arms. I measure my chest
: by wrapping it around my torso, right underneath the armpit. I
: measure my arms around the thickest part at a 90 degree bend
: (its to hard to measure with my arm straight, although, that's
: propbably the right way). I was wondering if these were good
: ways to measure, or if anyone has better ways to measure.
:
: By this way of measuring, I've added about 2 inches or so to my
: torso measurement and about an inch to my arms in about 5 months
: of lifting. I guess it's good that I'm gaining, but I don't
: think they're spectacular gains.
