I don't think you should discount either but rather take them at their value. I would feel far better if a friend asked me for advice than the local gym junkie or fitness trainer but I would not overstep the areas I have studied in. Certainly people who train reguarly have some knowledge but in the most part it is anecdotal and more often than not with a sample of 1. Horses for courses. Why seek advice from the local bodybuilders if you are after injury rehab advice? Or why seek expert advice for weight loss when a fitness trainer can usually provide that sort of thing. There is so much rubbish heard in gyms on a daily basis concerning squats, protein, back injury/exercise, supplements, muscles that dont exist (iliopsoas) etc etc etc and most gym goers absorb this stuff and regurgitate it to anybody who will listen, its a form of 'gym cred'. There are of course exceptions as can be seen on this board where persons who have trained for a long period of time have taken the time to expand their knowledge base beyond the muscle mags and supplement adverts. So think about what you want and seek the appropriate level of advice.
