my big nitens also has some rather large above ground roots---however, several other large eucalyptus of different species do not have this feature so this may not always be a problem. that said, most all eucalyptus have a rather shallow spreading root system and so are potentially liable to wind throw if there are strong winds and wet soils operating together. I do not recommend planting most any eucalyptus (except the very smallest species) any closer than 50' minimum to houses and structures because of that concern.
