I agree that E. leucoxylon may be worth a try in N. Florida. But a better bet may be E. caesia ssp. magna - nice big red flowers from a young age. It's grown on the E. coast of Australia so it should cope with heat plus humidity OK. It's also got a surprising degree of cold-tolerance for a WA species - maybe to -5C. I've had plants recover from an inch of snow frozen on their leaves. So given a sheltered spot... It's a bit of a straggly shrub but worth it for the flowers.
