I recently bought a young e. niphophila (snow gum) online. When delivered it was 97cm (approx 3' 2") and didn't look too root-bound, with plenty of wriggle room for the roots and fresh white tips. It was, however, staked to a small bamboo cane. I planted the tree and removed the stake, only to find that the tree was unable to support itself fully. Since it was forecast to be quite windy in the next few days, I have restored the stake (although only with one fixing point to the tree). So my question is, how long should I leave it before I remove the stake and let the tree fend for itself?
