yes, in my experience eucs often tend to "self-prune" if they are planted close together and if branches die off in this manner they will not be replaced. gunnii, urnigera,nitens, dalrympleana, rubida, pauciflora ssp. debeuzevillei, glaucescens, scoparia, and most of the other taller tree-type eucs will eventually tend to loose their lower branches anyway over a period of time starting at around 5 or so years in the ground which both exposes the attractive bark and allows the homeowner to maintain their landscape around the tree easier. with age they tend to broaden their crowns and look somewhat more like a standard "shade tree". part of the "problem" is that eucs tend to grow better in the u.s. (both in the s.e. or the pnw) than australia because our soils tend to be much richer than in their native country and as garden plants they tend to be more pampered anyway.
