I have noticed in my trials and testings growing various eucalyptus species that when I planted them out into 1gal and 3gal containers close together, when they started growing bigger their habit was to grow taller and many of their lower branches would die off. This may have been due to cold injury as well, but when I spaced the containers out more the lower branches developed much better and a nicer, more fully branched tree developed. Those that were spaced close together often never re-grew the lower branches which would cause the tree to develope into a top heavy plant, which would then require staking. Is this common that the lower branches will never re-grow? In regular trees this usually would never be a problem.
