Lisa--yes, if you want it to be what it wants to be---a tree then you wont need to "force" yourself (and it) into something else wacking it back on a regular basis. the mature foliage which is kind of like an evergreen weeping willow is ash grey in color and interesting in itself. eucs like many trees will take care of themselves and make you hopefully happy while doing so if you put them in the right place when you first plant them. BTW, eucs are naturally drought tolerant once established and will do fine with your natural rainfall. in fact, they are much the better for not being in a lawn area as they tend to develop shallow surface roots in such situations. best wishesand good luck with your tree.
