thanks ian,
i found the FAQ page after posting and put the tree in the ground the next day and it's growing fine. in my area there are many springs so i don't think i can limit it's water intake. my garden is about 5ft higher than the surrounding area but i don't think this will get in it's way. it has many other plants around it including a trachycarpus, a magnolia and a paulownia all competing for the nutrients but on the front of it are a few ensete's that get watered and fed regularly
so given the resources this tree will develop a dense canopy like most other trees or just a more dense canopy than that picture, but still quite open?
i suppose i'll see how it goes. i wonder if i could prune it?
thanks,
nigel
