There are no public plantings of WA eucalypts in Canberra, but it is hard to say what are in private gardens. The Aust National Botanic Gardens has some surprising large specimens of grandis and citriodora, but these type of subtropical species are not widespread in the area. It's hard or me to gauge possible plant damage from Sydney, but this type of cold front is the type of thing that happens every couple of years. The snow level was down to 700m as its peak; not quite low enough for it to snow in Canberra city, which only happens every five years on average (and it was a rather dry change).
The following link to Flickr gives you an idea of a normal winter in Canberra. The Brindabella Ranges to the SW are 1200m-1800m in height, and carry snow for several months.
