Steve, the s.w. acacias should probably be somewhat hardier to both heat and cold than most of the australian species---they will probably need full sun and very well drained soil to thrive. Phil, you are probably right about venation (but the smell-test should work about as well, also). enjoy your trip and stay healthy.
