I went to Daniel Stowe Bot. Gardens (Gastonia, NC) last summer and saw, at the very back of a planting bed, what I thought was a young acacia. I posted a message here about it back then. I went back last weekend to the gardens to do a promo for the tree company I work for. I naturally had to go and look at the plant to see how it faired thru this past winter, which was colder than usual. As I expected, the plant was dead. I snuck to the back of the bed to get a closer look at it. I plucked some branches, crammed them into my shirt pocket (they were tiny) and took pictures of the of plant. On the way home, I kept smelling eucalytus. I reached into the pocket, pulled out the leaves and crushed them. It was eucalytus alright, but now I had to find out what kind. I got online when I got home and came across a picture of a small E. nicholii.
I have never seen E. nicholii in person, but judging by the description of the odor and growth habit, I'm pretty sure this is it.
Does'nt seem too reliable here, so I think I'll avoid planting some of these.
Here is a picture from the web I found.
It sure looks like an acacia to me.
