It seems to have been the Mars Climate Observer. Apparently because of trying to do it all metric, but one of the providers supplying key data in the other system. At least that is the legend. As a result NASA reverted to "all Imperial"

It is not easy to change things like this, but sooner or later it will happen. It is already happening. A matter of gradually educating the newer generations into it. Meanwhile we must be respectful to the users of the other system and try to understand each other. I think we have ºF for a time
Moraleja: It doesn't really matter if a pint is a pint or nearly half a litre. What matters is that you may order another if beer tastes good!
