The UT Gardens here in Knoxville, TN (zone 7a) has had a Eucalyptus bridgesiana in the ground for many years, tolerating a decent string of fairly mild zone 8 winters. Here it was this past year:
It was doing well, so they planted another one:
I can report today that consecutive lows of 5F and 8F, with a couple of 60 hour freeze events and a pretty cold winter overall, will kill it to the ground! They have both been cut to the ground. We'll see if they sprout back, and even if they do I wonder if they'll decide to keep them. I think the older one died back in the single digits in 2003 also. It actually had flower buds on it in the fall! Oh well. The E. neglecta had almost no damage to it at all, and looks great. Here it was last year:
