my guess is that in most cases, the very samll eucalyptus seed need a precise combination of bare soil (no grass or other competing vegetation), adequate soil moisture, and warmth at the same time for successful germination. we can provide those combined conditions under greenhouse or indoor situations. apparently, it is much more difficult for this to happen under "natural" conditions in most northern hemisphere areas. moreover, the various species require slightly different combinations of these conditons at slightly different times of the year so what works for one species "in the wild" will not necessarlily work for another in their natural or introduced environments.
