When ,as a teenager 40 years ago ,I first began to grow Eucalypts from seeds I was told " It won ' t work we have never seen young Eucalypts growing nearby adult ones " . In western Europe it is almost the truth even in the most benign climates like Kennedy Arboretum ( southern Ireland ) or in the old gardens of the French Riviera . Apparently the only species which " weeds " is E . camaldulensis :in my garden ( USDA Zone 9 ) it sprouts in watered places but , fortunatly ,not as abondantly as you might expect when seing thousands of fruits on the gum by the end of Summer .None of the 15 or 20 others adult gums , including : E.archeri ,E .gunii ,dalrympleana ,rubida , johnstonii , globulus ,brookeriana , urnigera , viminalis ,leucoxylon and subsp.,sideroxylon to name a few ,never weeds although they produce viable seeds , shed leaves and bark are regularly removed ,the top soil is rather good and watered from time to time during the dry season , winter's minimas are not low ( I can grow citrus and others exotics without shelter ),Summer's temperatures are over 25 °C for 5 to 6 months .....Why ? not a " baby " in the garden and I can grow their seeds in pots at almost any time of the year . It is a bit of a mystery for me ! Any explanation ?
