The gum is the sticky brown matter which exsudes through the bark on the trunk and main branches of most adult Eucalypts .In iron - barks it saturates the bark which turns to a dark brown colour : a very interesting contrast with smooth - barked Eucalypts ( unfortunately I think most ironbark are 'nt hardy enough to grow outside USDA Zones 9 and 10 ( ? )
