George,Phil,Gus, Thanks for the input. Yeah, I,ve been spotty here lately.
I have found one obscure reference by googling 'Ornamental Eucalyptus for South Florida' published in Florida State Horticultural Society volume 20 pp.419-424,date 1963. "USDA Plant Introduction Station near Miami,Florida , has planted in the field 102 species of eucalyptus during the past 39 years...27 species listed in table 1 survived..."
Says one broken plant of E.gummifera alive (several years?) after original 9 trialed out.
Actually dissapointed to see some of my other favorites failed way back then.
I still see reference to this species as growing in association with E.robusta, and I know firsthand robusta does gangbusters in Houston.
Actually found another obscure reference googleing 'eucalyptus robusta sm'
evidently a lot of work done by forestry service way back trying to introduce robusta/gradis hybrids. Interesting references listed. Suprising to see that maybe a rubusta/globulus hybrid may have been tried somewhere.
Oh, by the way both corymbia gummifera and E. robusta have lignotubers.
Thanks guys.
Tom.
