Linking it to Tom's comments, most of the rootstocks mentioned were used to try to adapt the Mediterranean red flowering scions so they survived in different soils and more humid climates. But Sydney is essentially frostless. So the Aussies had no need to use cold hardy rootstocks.
Hence, C. gummifera in the Gulf could make some sense, as long as there was no frost.
