if you are concerned about the mold, you can just cut the moldy old stem back to a short stub and then wait for any re-growth from the base (be careful to mark the area with a stake so you dont end up accidentally mowing any regrowth while cutting the lawn). my guess is that whoever you saw growing globulus successfully in your area is in exactly the same situation you are in now with severely damaged or dead trees---the species is not reliable in severe winters (below about 20f)and those kind of conditions come sooner or later. nitens is very similar/closely related but somewhat hardier to cold but urnigera, nova-anglica, glaucescens, gunnii, archeri, perrinniana, neglecta, dalrympleana, niphophila, even nicholii are much more reliable (but all are susceptible to greater or lesser damage from sustained cold around 10-15f---though many will either survive or come back from the base from much lower temps). check out www.colvoscreek.com (washington), www.forestfarm.com (southern oregon) and www.worldplants.com (sheridan, oregon) for mail-order sources with many kinds of eucs. i grow about 30 different species of eucs here near bandon but our conditions are more reliably mild and i can normally "get away" with more tender species than folks in the valley.
