Hi there. I have a Tasmanian Bluegum that suffered dearly in the big freeze event of this winter. I'm new to the world of Eucs but love my tree dearly. It's was only in the ground about 9 months when it got frozen solid. It was about 15 tall and the base of the trunk was about 4 inches in diameter. The top 2/3 of the tree had more slender "adult" looking leaves.
After the bad weather of late '08 the tree looked alright. I left it be on the advice of my local nursery. About three weeks post hard freeze all the leaves turned brown. The branches were still alive at that time. More recently I've checked branches and most of them are now mushy and dead. The top half of the tree is now starting to develop mold on the trunk. The bottom half of the trunk still looks alright.
I'm not sure what to do now. The nursery said to leave until may and cut the dead stuff away then, and hope it puts off a shoot I can use to restart the tree. but I'm worried about the mold damaging what might still be alive at the base of the tree.
Any advice?
P.S. I'm so glad I found this sight. I was starting to feel like a total failure, but it looks like even experienced Euc people are having trouble this year.
