I'm glad to read about how this tree has fared in the PNW. I have had a few PNW customers purchase this tree from me and they wanted to try it even though I warned them about the danger that frosts and freezes pose for it. One idea I've suggested to people is that if they have a larger deglupta and a freeze is imminent, they can wrap the twinkle christmas lights around the trunk and main branches and leave them on all night. This might keep the trunk and bark from freezing and enable the tree to avoid being killed back to the ground.
