well, they are certainly growing the tree in coastal southern california from santa barbara to san diego and there is an excellent chance that there are favorable micro-climates where it would be a long-term tree for parts of the san francisco bay area (maybe even eureka). however, its long term possibilities (i.e. 5 years or better) for the coos bay area (and bandon) would seem problamatical since we can't get phoenix canariensis to last very long and i have seen no mature or even very large e. globulus--though i have seen large examples of both in gold beach and brookings near the california border. that said, i have had very good success with e. saligna and deanei (but the related robusta dies back almost every year)so i have been (pleasantly) surprised sometimes growing species which considering the natural habitats they normally grow in would seem to be "long term lost causes". so, if anyone in a generous and experimental mood wants to send me seed or even a plant or two of e. deglupta, i would be willing to give it a shot
!!! Gus, this would seem to be an excellent topic to discuss on the "growing on the edge forum" or even the "hardy palm and subtropical board" as well.
