if it branches very low to the ground i would think that it has less danger of splitting in high winds/snow load/whatever then if the forking is higher up the stem. however, if the tree is young and the forks are easily cuttable and you like the single stem look then consider cutting "now". if the tree is large and the forking stem are big then i would recommend that consider getting an arborist to check it out and give you a professional opinion.
