Okay, the answer is in the thread above. Of course, it is not sure to 100%, but I think it is a quite good bet (+75%). Makes sense because of seed cup comparison, and leaf outlook. But also because of this species growing in Mediterranean climates both in Southern Australia and in California, and it being a relatively common tree in Southern CA.
Two ways to confirm the ID. Drew might look and see if he can find immature flower buds (a snapped by the wind branch maybe, or some lucky shot with the camera zoom). The shape of these is very characteristic. Another way could be again looking near the base of this or other similar trees, and see if he can find some fruit cluster there. They should be brown, and lightly ribbed, but with a similar shapes and numbers to what is pictured in the plate.
