It sounds like Toptørre i ask. It is apparently a different cause than, but makes me remember the case of the Elm Disease, that wiped out very huge numbers of trees of this type. There is always a window for hope, given there is enough broad genetic variability, as there are always chances to find resistant genotypes, so to develop resistant cultivars. To compare it to something human, some of the negative sides of the Columbian Exchange did not wipe out all the native Americans.
