One of the biggest threats to the mounain gorillas in the Virunga Mountains is the illegal charcoal trade: Virunga National Park is being cleared for charcoal which is used for cooking and heating by the impoverished locals in the Congo. By planting fast-growing eucs in the surrounding areas, authorities are hoping to reduce this devastation (and by importing other types of stoves and heaters)
