Definitely helps explain why they can grow species like Grevillea robusta, that Ian was mentioned earlier. I speculated about this in my reply.
The situation in Canberra reminds me a bit of tales of freezes in extreme southern New Mexico. It is known that in the late 1960s, date palms recovered from -10F (-23 CELCIUS) in an extreme radiational freeze event. However, the next day the temperature was probably just above freezing, so the duration of the cold was brief.
