my advice if you still have the plants in a greenhouse is to take them out now---the heat and humidity in there is liable to stimulate the kind of branching that you find yourself trying to deal with. saligna is a very fast growing species under nomrmal conditions so keeping them indoors is doing them no help. unless you live in a cold part of california (in which case you should not be trying this species anyway it should make more satisfactory growth outside. even here on the oregon coast an 8 year old plant is over 35' tall from setting out as a 2' tall one gallon seedling (a sister seedling planted in a nearby location is over 50'). it is normally a coastal species so if you are trying to grow it in a hot dry situation like the central valley (without giving lots of irrigation) you might have problems but mild summer/moist relatively cool winter areas should do fine.
