I planted seed of Eucapyltus saligna in december of last year (in a greenhoue in California). The seeds germinated within a month and are now between 4-6 inches, at approximately 4 months of age. They are in 8.25 inch deep Leach tubes. The last couple of months, I have fertilized with a 15-0-15 fertilizer solution at about 100ppm every 3-4 weeks. I have recently noticed that some of the seedlings have lateral shoots that are challenging the leader. I have been pruning those off...do folks agree that this is appropriate at this time or should I leave them on for any reason? My goal is to have 2 foot trees by October of 2009 (hopefully they will not be too much taller, to promote better establishment and future growth rate) with well developmed root systems and strong leaders. Any and all advise is welcome.
