Hey Richard, you will probably never read this, but I was out at the LA Arb this Sat and saw an E. rhodantha with giant red flowers. Probably not very hardy in Z9b, and I read it has phytopthora problems, but what a beauty. Their's is only 8' x 5' high about the same as the specimen out at Huntington. An old gardner saw me looking at it , and said they used to have 2 out in the Aus section that they tried for a long time to espailier, but said that they died. Of course I'm left to wonder if they were killed by frost or what.
Yes, probably impractical, but espailier for eucs. caught LA Arb's imagination also. I looked real close for seed, but only could pick up the smallies that will probably not have any - the gum nuts are really huge , and I bet the Arb people would never think of propagating this rare beauty.
Hey, E. sideroxylon 'Rosea',E. globulus, C. citriodora, C. ficifolia all start easy from seed - in a 72 plug jiffy tray in my Motel window. Too bad I can't grow this fantastic stuff in Texas.
Later gator,
Tom.
