Yes George, and that means traits as cold hardiness (or drought tolerance, or whatever related to climate or soil) are not dependant on taxonomy 
They depend on specialization ("natural screening") of whatever genetic pool (shaped as a tree population) to slowly changing environmental conditions (geological scale). They adapt. And evolve. And thus, "forms", varieties, subspecies or species do appear Which, as always, links to the concept of seed provenance!
