Karen, fyi, most of the books are written for more temperate climates and non island conditions so be careful of some of their recommendations. most all eucs prefer "warm" climates (i.e. they do not like the winter conditions of regular frost and snow typical of much of the mainland) but many (including e. nicholii) actually come from areas that have a distinct cool season with low temps in the 40's or even mid 30's for several months and may not be completely happy if they are in a place that does not have a cool season. most of the eucs commonly cultivated on the islands (saligna, robusta, citriodora, deglupta) come from more sub-tropical to tropical areas and are naturally better adapted to local conditions. that said, good luck with your baby and if it doesnt work out, and all other conditions of soils and nutrients, and pests are good you might want to try a different species like citriodora which has kind of similar foliage but even more beautiful bark plus may be happier in your climate.
