persea (aka michalus) thunbergii is a very handsome reasonably fast growing evergeen laurel that seems to do well in your area---woodlanders sells it. here it produces fruit that look like giant blueberries with viable seeds inside. it looks vaguely like magnolia virginiana with deep green foliage and a dense crown. excellent plant.
