October 17, 2008 — Women with endometriosis are at increased risk of having co-existing pelvic inflammatory disease or irritable bowel syndrome, according to findings from a large case-control study conducted in the UK.
Writing in the October issue of BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, the research team notes that pelvic inflammatory disease and irritable bowel syndrome are more likely to be diagnosed in women with endometriosis than in those without. However, this could reflect misdiagnoses.
"Since pelvic inflammatory disease and irritable bowel syndrome are largely diagnosed and treated within primary care," Dr. K. D. Ballard and co-investigators write, "a misdiagnosis of these conditions may be a key contributor to the delayed diagnosis of endometriosis, which is currently reported to be 9 years."
