Posted by Barbara The other thought that came to my mind was I wonder if you had an allergic contact dermatitis reaction to the wafer instead of yeast? Was the irritation under the entire wafer area in a pattern like the wafer? Or maybe mainly under the tape border area - that could be a reaction to the tape. They make wafer only systems with no tape border if that is the case. I would suggest you get a wafer and cut out a small piece along with a piece of the tape border. Put this somewhere on your abdomen OTHER than where the ostomy will be. Check it daily to see if your skin is getting irritated at that area. If you are allergic to the wafer you may want to try another company's brand, there are many, many companies that make ostomy supplies. There is also one that makes a non-adhesive ostomy system for those folks that can not tolerate any type of wafer - the company is called EHOB. This system takes a while to get accustomed to. I have also used Kenalog spray, a steroid spray, on some patients that are allergic to the wafer - this should only be used for a SHORT while though since it is a steroid spray until some other pouching system can be found. You may want to check out the websites for Convatec and Hollister. They are both large ostomy companies and have a lot of information on their websites. I hope some of this helps. Take care.

Oh Jess, I'm so sorry you had such a hard time with the ostomy. Did you ever try Mycostatin powder for the yeast? The powder works better under the ostomy wafer than a cream - creams tend to be oily and make it VERY difficult for the wafer to adhere. I teach my patients to 'crust' the powder. Sprinkle some on where the irritation is, brush off the excess with your finger, then blot over top of this with a No Sting barrier wipe - repeat this entire process for 3 layers then apply the wafer. I have patients repeat this process every 3 days until the rash clears then they can go back to every 5-7 day wafer changes.
