in case anyone is interested the "decorative motif" used in the hardcover edition of *Sinai Tapestry* (see the page on this site) is actually an arabic word: al-hajj. It means "the pilgrimage". I suspect it's choice was intentional.

Thanks for finally clearing up, what was a mystery to me. When I first designed this site, I tried to find out what the symbol meant. I looked all over the Internet, studied Arabic glyphs with no success. It seems all things come to those who wait.
The meaning "pilgrimage" is perfectly appropriate and most certainly intentional and was probably suggested by Whittemore himself.

It is most Whittemorian as in Jericho Mosaic Abu Musa and Moses play shesh besh in Bell's garden.
I myself have never fathomed it, but then again I have never been taught it. I will have a go.
