I have a German Shepherd who is a year and 8 months old who has been showing what I believe is signs of fear reactivity/aggression with other dogs. I want to start working with her right away on this, since it is not a behavior that I want her to have ingrained as she gets older. She does very well with other people, very friendly. She also does well with the neighbor’s dog who I have taken her over to play with often. However, I have noticed the problem with her when I have taken her to the local dog park. She will seem to act eager to see the other dogs, and will try to play with them. But quickly she will start to show what I believe are signs of fear/ uncertainty: tail tucked, ears back and starts hunching down which as the other dog is trying to check her out escalates quickly with snarling and snapping. On these occasion I have reacted quickly l, gotten her back on the leash and have taken her away from the situation and the park. I realize that the dog park might end up never being a good situation for us, but I don’t want her reactivity to get worse and want to help her build confidence. She is also intact which I am wondering if that might be causing some of her behavior issues. Her last heat cycle was in June, and she is currently not showing any physical signs of getting ready to enter into another heat cycle. With these recent incidences I am unsure about a group training session being appropriate for her and feel slightly concerned about taking her over to play with the neighbor dog. I do think that getting some positive experiences for her and doing it soon would probably be the best and try to build on that. Any thoughts you might have would be appreciated, thanks.
