Focus on me/eye contact is lacking, mostly when outdoors. I looked up some ways to train for this and weíre working on it.
I think I give him too much attention/affection that he doesnít work for. His write-up at the Humane Society said ďMiles loves to be petted,Ē and itís true. I should probably use this as a means to further training instead of giving too much thatís unearned.
The dog park Ė since I got him at six months, and given his lack of adequate outdoor focus on me, Iím thinking I need to reinforce that the most fun times are with me, not other dogs. His on-leash behavior has gone downhill around other dogs, despite trips to Petsmart, Home Depot and shopping centers. Iím going to cut back on our outings Ė maybe once every couple weeks.
I remember in class you said not to work them for more than 15 minutes or so when training them to heel, etc. But when I apply that to our walks, and 15 min = a mile, I realize that I fall short on the split between loose lead and healing. When heís heeling, there are many times his body language says itís all he can do to slow down and walk beside me, plus I have to draw him back too often. He needs more practice with self control and focus. Working on it!
Iím hoping that the above will help with recall training, but realize that weíll still have a really long way to go, so your input would be appreciated.
