You are doing fine. All of this would have been a non issue if you had chosen an "airline" type crate in the first place...
Using the sheet as a cover wouldn't have happened, either...
Remember that dogs are den dwellers, and while we would be happy to be able to see out on all sides, that doesn't make a dog happy. The good news is that he hasn't wrecked the crate and gotten out. If that happens, you will have a dog that basically entertains himself by trying to figure out a way out!
When I first crate train a dog (not pup) I use a VERY STURDY crate.. usually a full metal military dog crate. After he gets used to that, and I'm not seeing any attempts to get out, I move him down to a airline crate, then to a heavy metal wire, then a portable wire (what you have) and then I can use a collapsible soft crate. All crates are NOT created equal! Good luck!
