I like to actually let my weightpull dogs act like fools. LOL! I let them pull me to the chute and don't do a lot of obedience before an event. I also do lots of dragweight(light to medium weight), and not much cart work. For some dogs the cart work can be stressful, and without a good "spotter" it can actually hurt their performance.
I like to dragweight for almost 8 weeks, 3 times a week before i do any structured training. I use the "work" command, and keep saying it the whole time they are dragging. I only increase the weight very gradually.
I am hunting alot lately, but if you would like to come up after hunting season, I could probably give you some pointers.
My wife does most the WP training, other than cart work(we do that together). She like to let the dog have free reign on the dragwork. As long as they don't run off she does it off leads, and makes it really fun for the, We do not use food or toys though as that seems to cause problems ...all praise. WE do give treats in the crate after a pull round on the cart, as a reward, but we don't bait or reward in the DW or in the chute.
If you have a prticular question, go ahead and ask, and i will try to help you.
