Well, here I am again, writing about the death of a dog. Many of you who read this board understand the sheer devastation and agony of saying goodbye to your beloved friend and faithful companion. Perhaps it was at the end of some illness, or simply a long life well spent. Then again, some die peacefully in their sleep. So hard on the owner, as they never got to say goodbye, and perseverate over what they should have known and would have done. The pain is so very real, a stabbing dagger to the heart that steals your breath away. Those that have experienced this, lived through this – perhaps even multiple times – understand the utter helplessness and despair you feel.
The sorrow I feel tonight is multi-layered, because it was not my dog, but the dog of my best friend that died unexpectedly today. To watch someone you love hurt so badly; and to find yourself so completely incompetent and useless is maddening. The gut-wrenching heartache that engulfs them will only diminish over time, yet if possible you’d move heaven and earth to ease their pain or even perhaps change the outcome of this horrible day's event. How exasperating and infuriating!
So goodbye sweet prince; you gave SO MUCH to those you loved that you will NEVER be forgotten by those who LOVED YOU TOO.
