 That's a great question and one I get asked often. Both my german shepherds have passed their TDI (Therapy Dog Institute) test and have both passed personal protection titles. My dogs haven't been to hospitals, but they are capable of doing. I do have a female that wouldnt enjoy it as much as she doesn't love to be petted and played with unless you want to throw the ball or toy for about 20 hours, but my male would soak it up. It is definitely possible and part of my goal is always showing my dogs are friendly and protection trained because most people I run into don't believe it.
