I'm convinced the problem is in the breed. My suggestion is to get a good German Shepherd! 
Actually, my Dutch Shepherd Snap exhibits the same lack of concern for my person as your Malinois Mako has for yours... although it has gotten better with time. I do think these two breeds are a bit more "needy" and are not as happy laying at your feet like the GSD; instead they must have some kind of physical contact with you (the old “put me in your pocket” routine). Snap is much better now at 19 months of age, choosing to jump OVER me and then slather herself next to the length of my body in bed.
Perhaps what I used that you haven’t tried is my BOOMING voice... do you want me to record some nice shake-the-rafters correction words for you??????
